Dear Commissioners, I'm writing as a supporter of Great Highway Park asking you to approve application 2-24-0933 (Great Highway Vehicular Closure/Sloat Bike Lanes) to maximize coastal access along San Francisco's Great Highway. I am proud to have voted for Proposition K, which instructs the City to use two miles of the coastal Great Highway as a park promenade space, opening this incredible piece of California coastline to be accessed and enjoyed by more people. Now that a majority of San Franciscans have approved the measure and the election has been certified, I ask the Commission to approve this application so that the park can be opened in a thoughtful and expeditious manner. The Great Highway has long been primarily used for non-coastal purposes. This application will transform two miles into the much-needed space San Francisco voters asked for that primarily furthers Coastal Act goals by enhancing and restoring the coastal environment, maximizing public access and recreational opportunities, and ensuring that our coast is used for coastal purposes. Accordingly, I respectfully request that you: Approve the Coastal Permit. I support the analysis and recommendations by the Coastal Commission staff, and urge you to approve the permit because the project advances the goals of the Coastal Act in improving both coastal access and recreation while enabling habitat restoration and environmental protection. Require Monitoring and Evaluation of Modal Separation as Part of the Access Management Plan. As requested by Commissioners at the weekend pilot program hearing, the City plans to provide modal separation by instituting separate areas for cyclists and other recreational users of the space. I support a trial of this approach, but believe it should be flexible, monitored, and evaluated to ensure we can design a space that best facilitates the safe enjoyment of the coast by all. I would like the City to have flexibility to adjust the modal configuration as needed in order to maximize public access and enjoyment. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely,
Thank you for helping to make Ocean Beach Park a reality!
